CHOOSING CARPET SIZE

Luxury hand-knotted Designer Carpets and Rugs and most Modern Handcrafted Rugs are mostly individual and unique. Each rug has its own colour, design and quality. So when this is the case you need to know which size you are looking for in order to select the right Modern or Persian Carpet available in the showroom at the time. Hand-knotted carpets are often different in exact size because of the natural weaving and design process but there are general categories of sizes.

At Master Rugs at 487 Church St. Richmond, we have three main size categories:

  1. Under The Sofa(s)

3.50 meters by 2.50 meters and larger

  2. Partially Under The Sofa(s)

3.40 meters by 2.00 meters and larger

  3. In Front of The Sofa(s)

    3.00 meters by 2.00 meters

The first question to determine the most suitable rug or carpet size is where you would like it. The living room is the most essential spot for a carpet.

The Living Room

If the carpet is for the living room its size can be directed by if it is an open-plan area or surrounded by walls. Most modern homes in Melbourne have an open-plan living and kitchen area. In a modern open-plan setting, we recommend placing the carpet under or half under the sofa and/or chaise. This helps define the space as a separate living area with no walls to confine the space. This does not mean one cannot use a larger carpet in a closed-off area. A larger carpet can make a room feel bigger and more useable as seen in one of the photos of our unique Ari Gold Design.

The size used to define a space is anywhere between 3.00 meters by 2.40 meters to 4.00 meters by 3.00 meters. The smaller size of this scale is used by placing the sofa's front legs on the carpet so partially on the carpet. In the case of the larger side then all the furniture can sit on the carpet.

If the living room is confined by walls then the carpet is limited by the space and usually can look good in front of the sofa or partially under. This size usually is around 3.00 meters by 2.00 meters. These rooms are often more traditional so we have a range of Persian Carpets along with Modern Handmade Designer Carpets that sit in front of the sofa so you can see the whole design and its frame or border. Here is an example of a Persian Carpet with a border, the border also has a signature by the maker woven into the surrounding frame design.

The Dining Room

In most modern open-plan homes the dining room is also visible from the living area. If this is the case then it looks more coherent to have a carpet under the dining table as well. The minimum width is usually 2.50 meters and the length can vary with the size of the table.

It is better to have a handmade woollen carpet and one that is wide enough for the dining chairs to be pulled out without landing on the hard floors. This is why it should generally be more than 2 meters wide.

The Hallway

A large portion of Melbourne homes have hallways. The best option is to place the runner in the middle of the hall but not right to the ends leaving an even gap on each end. These vary from three meters to ten meters long by 0.80 to 1.00 meters wide. We have a range of hall runners up to ten meters long at the showroom located at 487 Church St. Richmond Vic. Some are also available online Hall Runners.

The Bedrooms

It is usually appealing to have the carpet partially under the bed and coming out in front of the bed and around the sides. The size for a Queen Bed is around 3.00 meters by 2.50 meters or larger and a King Bed is 3.50 meters by 2.50 meters or more. In many cases, a Traditional Design or Persian Rug will be placed at the end of the bed as a feature.

Other Areas

A rug can be placed at an entrance, in the office, in the bathroom or on the wall. There are even waterproof carpets that go under the outdoor dining table. We have a number of Outdoor Rugs in our unique Yacht Club Collection that are made from recycled plastic and can be outdoors more in-store.

Conclusion

The approximate size of the carpet is defined by how you would like to have it, either under the furniture, partially under the furniture or in front of the furniture. Generally speaking, larger carpets make the space look more useable and hence the room feels larger.
