What Fabric is it?
Wool Rugs
In general Persian Carpets are made of wool on a cotton base. If this is the case then hand dusting and washing in lukewarm water and colourless mild soap followed by drying in a proper drying room is the best option. This is a Persian Carpet that can be washed Kerman Persian Carpet.

Silk Rugs
If the rug is made of silk, bamboo silk or viscose the process is a little more complex. The colour has a higher chance of running. So the first thing is to test the colourfastness of the dyes. If this test is passed then after dusting the wash needs to be with cool water or a wet sponge so this task takes longer to do. It also needs to be dried within 24 hours so the temperature of the drying room needs to be higher. Consequently, the cost of washing silks is $59 Plus GST per square meter.
How was it Made?
In most cases hand hand-knotted carpets are made in countries where natural wool and silk are used so can be washed. However, budget Machine Carpets often are made of cheaper fabrics such as acrylics which are harder to keep clean and wash.
If the carpet has a cotton backing on it then it is often a Hand Tufted Rug. These require glue to keep the pile from coming off the cotton backing. If washed the glue will discolour the rug or carpet. So the best option for these is dry cleaning which can be done onsite.
